When a child is sick, being close to home matters. Studies have shown that when family and friends are able to visit a sick child, that child can handle their illness better and even heal more quickly. If it’s your child or grandchild that’s ill and needs treatment, you want them as close as possible to home!
When a child is seriously ill, the distress is felt beyond just the family to friends, workplaces, and neighborhoods. For years children from the
Mid-Columbia region have traveled out of the area to seek treatment for most serious illness. Travel and distance creates hardships not only for the child, but for the parents and family as well. For parents, time away from work adds to the stress and often impacts the family’s finances.
Kadlec Medical Center seeks to improve the health status and treatment options for children in the Mid-Columbia region by building a child-centered, dedicated pediatric floor in the new Kadlec Tower.
The need for a Pediatric Center in the Mid-Columbia region is clear when you examine population trends. Currently, in Benton and Franklin Counties, infants and children up to age 18 number almost 63,000 of the 225,000 residents . In just 13 years (2020) projections show that the population total of Benton and Franklin Counties will be 254,000. But, the most important statistic of all: children under 18 years of age are expected to number 85,200. That’s nearly 22,000 more children than the current population. As the population grows the number of births will increase, as well as the needs for pediatric programs and services. We want to be prepared for these trends.
